紫水晶的英文名 Amethyst，來自希臘語 ”Amethystos”，意思是「醒酒」。這個名字的由來，除了是因為紫水晶具有像葡萄酒的深紫色外，更是因為從古至今紫水晶都被視為有助自我控制、鎮定及開發智慧，所以也被稱為智慧之石。
